GTZ Conference: Local and Regional Economic Development in Asia, Vientiane, November 2006

GTZ, together with SDC, IFAD, ILO and InWEnt, organized an international Conference on Local and Regional Economic Development to Overcome Poverty in Asia.

About 150 delegates from countries all over the Asian region, and including participants from South and West Africa, met in Vientiane, Laos, from 22 to 24 November 2006. 5 working groups elaborated how, based on their practical experience, to approach specific LRED issues such as governance, subnational reforms, partnerships and impact monitoring.

The tone for the conference discussions was set by lead international experts, among them Hubert Schmitz, IDS Sussex, and Jörg Meyer-Stamer, Mesopartner, who emphasized the challenges for the Asian region due to the surge of China as major economic power, and highlighted the need to focus on competitiveness as a basis for effective and sustainable poverty alleviation. The proceedings as well as the presentations of the Conference can be found on the main website for the event (see link, above).
